OUR STAFF

As a mature staff, most of whom have several years of experience working together, we’ve developed a rich understanding of the running of our camp and the importance of our role as mentors to young people. Most of our staff have grown up through Camp Chrysalis and many are professional teachers during the school year.

In addition to the veteran staff listed below, Camp Chrysalis benefits immensely from its Counselors-in-Training program. These are older campers (16 years+) — usually, though not exclusively, Chrysalis veterans — who demonstrate leadership at camp and seek the challenges and satisfaction of taking an active role passing down camp traditions and supporting camp operations. That many of our staff have grown up through this program is the greatest testament to both its success and to its importance to the camp.

As our CIT’s move into college, some of them advance and become junior counselors, guided by our more veteran staff to learn the skills of becoming a counselor. Several then become middle level counselors advancing in their understanding of camp and the needs of young people. Finally, our more veteran staff have made a long-term commitment to Camp C and are invited to become senior staff.

All middle and senior staff have gone through intensive first aid training often with NOLS Wilderness certification. We carry a complete medical kit on every excursion and are trained in the treatment of common injuries and conditions which may occur in outdoor settings. We are also aware of nearby hospitals and clinics for any major accidents that may occur at camp. In addition, several staff have lifeguard certification and others have Food Safety certification.

CURRENT FULL-TIME STAFF

lee_1.jpg

Lee Tempkin

Lee has been an educator and mentor to young people since 1973 as a teacher and middle school director. After 45 years in education, he is loving retirement where he spearheads Camp Chrysalis between summers and listens to live music as often as he can. He loves conifers, birds, singing, cooking, and hiking in the Sierras. He tunes the camp organizational engine while sharing his fascination with the outdoors and his vision for building community.

Gideon Lazarus

Gideon Lazarus is an actor, director, and playwright living in NYC. He has been a part of Camp Chrysalis for over twenty years and is deeply passionate about outdoor education and stewardship for the environment. His favorite camp spot is Saxonia Lake, and favorite meal is Burrito Bar.

andrew_1.jpg

Andrew Risinger

Andy first worked at Camp Chrysalis in 2009 and enthusiastically returned to camp in 2016 after taking an eventful hiatus. The epic call of fatherhood, living in the Pacific Northwest, and intensive baseball studies were the focus of the time off. Originally from Pennsylvania, Andy grew up camping and falling out of trees in the Allegheny National Forest. It is in that forest that he developed a love of starry nights, birds, high places, geologic history, and (once moving to California) the ocean and redwoods. When not camping, Andy teaches history at Park Day School, chases his kids around the yard, attempts to fix his house, and tries not to fall out of trees.

jojo_1.jpg

Jojo Hartman

Jojo started at camp in 2013 and was excited to transition to staff after 8 years. She currently teaches 9th grade ESL and Biology in Massachusetts and loves hiking, camping, and backpacking on school breaks. At camp, Jojo loves sharing her excitement for backpacking and the outdoors, making friendship bracelets, and swimming in freezing lakes.

Emiliano_1.jpg

Emiliano Garcia-Sarnoff

Emiliano is an English and Journalism teacher at an innovative charter high school in Chico, CA. He's a UC Berkeley grad and holds a Master's in education from Chico State. He's done an off-trail solo week in the snowy High Sierras, circumnavigated Cuba by bicycle, boated down the Mekong, was kidnapped briefly in Morocco, and wrestled alligators in the Amazon, among a lifetime full of adventures. He's a father of four.

Tyler_1.jpg

Tyler Miller

Tyler grew up climbing trees and walking goats in Tilden Park, and was a camper at the Sierra and Backpacking sessions. He graduated from Stanford University in 2019, and is now an Assistant Technical Director at Cal Scenic. When he isn’t building theater sets or getting his shoes muddy on a hike, you can usually find him in the kitchen of his co-op. He returns to staff whenever he can, and this summer he can’t wait to pass on his passion for woodworking, cooking, and Gastropod mollusks.

Evie_1.jpg

Evie Warner

Evie first attended camp at age nine and returned every summer, eventually transitioning from camper to staff member. She studied Environmental Design at the University of Colorado Boulder and is passionate about designing urban environments that allow more people to access and connect with nature. Her specialty is creating pollinator-friendly cities that help people better understand nature where they live. At camp, she loves leading wildflower walks, guiding ambitious woodworking projects, and teaching watercolor.

Eva_1.jpg

Eva Langenthal

Eva has been going to camp since they were 13 and has been working as a councilor starting in 2022. They are graduating from the University of Puget Sound with degrees in English and STHS. Camp was an important way for them to escape into nature growing up and they hope to pass on that appreciation to the next generation of campers. They are excited to do a lot of arts and crafts and see lots of cool birds!

Lucas_1.jpg

Lucas

Lucas began as a camper at Camp C when he was 13 and fell in love with its nature and community. When not at Camp C, Lucas is a filmmaker between Hawai'i and New York; making films about his Hawaiian community and teaching multimedia-storytelling to teens through the New York Public Library, respectively. Lucas enjoys the crystal clear lakes of the Sierras, the salty tides of Mendocino, and the quiet mystery in the Big Sur Trees

Eliana_1.jpg

Elliana Porter

Ellie started coming to camp in 2015 after a recommendation from a former staff member, and has been coming to camp ever since. She joined staff in 2022, and her favorite camp activities are swimming, making friendship bracelets, and watching the sunset in Mendocino. This year she will be graduating from UC Santa Barbara with a degree in Sociology. In her free time she enjoys drawing, reading, and rock climbing.

sean_1.jpg

Sean Zhang

Sean started attending Camp Chrysalis around 2018 and has continued ever since. He is currently entering his junior year at UC San Diego majoring in Chemical Engineering. In his free time he loves to either go on hikes or dwell in his mini-workshop and work on random projects. But at camp, he tends to wander around, helping campers with their woodworking projects, and engages in board game activities with campers.

michael_1.jpg

Michael Rossman - Founding Director

Michael, an ardent naturalist and founding director, died May 15, 2008, after an arduous battle with leukemia. He taught science by looking under every rock, learning to “read” the land and its story, and coming to every new environment with an eager mind and open heart. His passion inspired many campers and staff throughout our camp’s existence, and his spirit continues to walk barefoot through camp as we share his love of road kill and edible wild plants, sing songs and tell stories of working people’s struggles. He lived life according to his own rules and influenced a generation of young people in the East Bay.
